National Committee President Frans Camilleri launched Skål’s new web-site at the Intercontinental Hotel on 28 September.

The web-site has been redesigned and made more user-friendly, its content has been updated, and additional pages have been added to cover various aspects of the two Skål Clubs’ activities in Malta.

In launching the new site, Mr Camilleri emphasised that, apart from being a portal for foreign tourism and travel professionals to become acquainted with industry colleagues in Malta, the new site seeks to highlight the services from which Skål members in Malta can benefit.  He mentioned, in particular, the special benefits available to them from foreign Skålleagues, in terms of discounts at hotels and for other services when they travel abroad, as well as their ability to register as preferred contacts for foreign Skålleagues wishing to do business in Malta.

During the launch, members made various suggestions which will be reviewed and incorporated in further updates of the site.

The new site has been developed and will be maintained by Mr Edward Paris, whom Mr Camilleri thanked for the effort he put in.

This year's “Spirit of Skål” Award went to Joe Borg Olivier who, over the years, has been very active in Skål International. A well-known personality in the local and international Travel and Tourism trade, Joe Borg Olivier is the immediate Past President of the local Club. He has held the position of Internal Auditor of Skål International for over 4 years. Currently he holds the position of International Councillor of the Mediterranean Area Committee.

President Frans Camilleri presented the award during a social gathering and whilst thanking him for the sterling work he has been doing for Skål, he wished him more success especially in the forthcoming elections for the post of Director of the Executive Committee of Skål International to be held in Durban later on in the year. Mr Borg Olivier thanked the President and the committee for the nice gesture, however, he expressed his feeling that the award came too early for him as he still had a long way to go. He assured those present that he would keep giving his time to better the lot of the trade in general and Skål in particular.

The “Spirit of Skål” award is given to local members who are very active in Skål. Previous holders of the award are: Victor J. Borg, Victor Mercieca, Albert Muscat Inglott and George Schembri.

A group of members of Skål International Malta lead by the President Frans Camilleri recently spent an extended weekend in Budapest. This was the fourth trip organised by the club in its social calendar.  Previous trips have included Taormina, Stockholm and Amsterdam.

The trip, which was organised with the collaboration of Air Malta, saw the beginning of relations between Skål Malta and Skål Budapest, whose club was recently re-launched by George Paldi, now its President.  To celebrate the occasion, Skål Budapest invited the Maltese contingent to an evening at the Moulin Rouge Nightclub, which was also attended by Malta's Ambassador in Budapest, H.E. Dr. Noel Buttigieg Scicluna.
Frans Camilleri and Sandra La Rosa, Vice President, presented gifts to George Paldi, and to Mario Weber, Skål Budapest Secretary during the dinner.

The President of the International Skål Council, Lone Ricks, recently visited Malta with one of her cultural opera groups. Malta has one of the most precious opera houses, well-preserved, dating back to 1731. While in Malta, Lone Ricks took time off to have dinner with Frans Camilleri, President Skål International Malta, George Schembri, Secretary Skål International Malta, and Joe Borg-Olivier, Councillor Mediterranean Area. Another good example of “Doing business among friends”.

2002 Skål Malta Tourism Awards ceremony
A Marquee on the Birgu Promenade was recently the venue for the first-ever Skål Malta Tourism Awards ceremony. The awards were organised by Skål International Malta in conjunction with The Malta Financial and Business Times. Minister for Tourism Dr Michael Refalo and Mrs Refalo were guests of honour during the Gala Dinner presentation. These awards marked a milestone for the Malta Tourism and Travel Industry with various market players being awarded for their contribution to the industry. Over 260 Skålleagues and guests attended the electrifying evening. In his welcome address, Skål International Malta President Mr. Joe Borg Olivier said that the number of applications received for the awards was most encouraging and augurs well for future editions of the Awards. Mr. Joe Borg Olivier added that the aim of the awards was to encourage professionalism within the industry and for all partners to work together for a common goal – the goal of success. Tourism is the mainstay of Malta's economy, and with around 10% of the Maltese workforce employed directly within the industry and a further 20% render services indirectly to the industry, it is important that we encourage quality and professionalism in service. Awards were presented for eight different categories with Air Malta's Chairman Mr Louis Grech being awarded the Tourism and Travel Personality of the Year. Mr. Borg Olivier thanked the adjudicating panel chaired by Salv Stellini for the hard work they put into the project. The autonomous panel was free to decide the winners of the awards on criteria developed by Skål International Malta Committee. Joe Borg Olivier also thanked the sponsors without whom the evening would not have been such a success. These were Malta Tourism Authority, Air Malta, Airbus, Middle Sea Insurance, Gozo Channel, Marsovin, Wands, Casino di Venezia and Phoenician Glassblowers.
